4. Houston Astros

Much like the Pittsburgh Pirates, the Houston Astros have been slowly but surely climbing out of the early season hole that they dug themselves into. With a 50-43 record, they have lately resembled last season’s Astros that nearly beat the Kansas City Royals in the American League Divisional Series. They are just 1.5 games back from the Toronto Blue Jays for the second wild card spot.

Their starting rotation was terrible early in the season, but they have been better as of late. Dallas Keuchel is still not himself (4.80 ERA), but even with his struggles, the Astros still have two players with an ERA+ of over 100 (Lance McCullers and Doug Fister) and another one who is darn close with a 99 ERA+ (Collin McHugh). They could stand to upgrade their rotation a bit if the price isn’t too much. Andrew Cashner sounds like the perfect candidate to trade for.

If Cashner can get back to what he was before his terrible 2016 season, that would give the Astros a huge edge. It might even help them catch the Texas Rangers for the division lead. Cashner has been extremely good in the past and would serve as a nice innings eater at worst. The best part? Houston wouldn’t have to give up too much for him so they can address other needs.
