Looking at five teams who could match up with the San Diego Padres and make a trade for starting pitcher Tyson Ross before the MLB trade deadline.

Coming into the season Tyson Ross looked like a perfect trade candidate. He was in his prime, he struck about one batter per inning, and he never gave up home runs. He also has one year of arbitration left after this year. The Padres will surely be toward the bottom of the National League, so Ross should have been their top trade chip.

While most of that came to fruition, Ross, unfortunately, has not seen a field since early April. He suffered a shoulder injury after his start of the season. While he was diagnosed to be out anywhere from one to four months, it looks like it is closer to the long end of the timetable.

Ross was close to making his first rehab start when a freak ankle injury set him back. There has been no update from the team as to when he will officially embark on his return to the roster, but all indications say it should not be a long delay due to the injury.

If Ross is to get back into the rotation and at least get a start in, the Padres have to try to land something for him. They could even tempt to have him clear waivers and make a move in August surrounding him if he is not able to throw until too late into July. Ross will more than likely make more than the Padres want to give him in the 2017 off-season.

To hold onto him through the season and to go into the offseason where he only has the one season of team control dwindles his value. They would have to hope Ross is pitching at an elite level, and that the team trading for him knows that they can extend him in the offseason. Otherwise, it limits their market.

If you are to trade him this year, the team acquiring him knows that at the very least he gets one playoff runs and another full season with the team. That is a lot more valuable.

Here are the five teams the Padres can trade Tyson Ross to before the trade deadline on August 1.
