Legendary Washington Redskins superfan Chief Zee has passed away from unknown causes.

The Washington Redskins are one of the NFL’s most storied franchises and one of the NFL’s most valuable franchises as well. They are among the league’s most popular teams and consistently draw solid ratings. Perhaps their most famous fan, Chief Zee, has passed away from unknown causes.

Zee showed up to most home games dressed in his full outfit. His tradition began during a Monday Night Football game in 1978.

"“The Washington Redskins will always appreciate Zema Williams’ unique passion and dedication to our football team and his fellow Washington Redskins fans,” said the team, via NBC Washington."

Zee was very popular among fans because of his energy and kindness. He went to virtually every home game and even some away games. A retired car salesman, Zee recently faced hard times. It’s telling that many fans came out to help him and even set up a GoFundMe account to help him raise money for him.

In 2000, the NFL chose a fan from each franchise for an exhibit in Canton. Zee was the representative from the Redskins. Many viewed his costume to be offensive just like the team’s name. November 7, 1985 was ruled Chief Zee Day in Washington, D.C. His funeral and viewing details have yet to be released.

Zee is well known for his friendship with Dallas Cowboys fan Wilford “Crazy Ray” Jones. He missed a home game to visit Dallas to honor his friend when Jones died.
