Leicester City announce the signing of captain Wes Morgan to a new deal as they prepare to defend their Premier League championship.

Wes Morgan joined the Leicester City Football Club, then in the Championship division, in 2012. Four years later, he has signed a new contract after captaining the Foxes to the  Premier League title last season.

Morgan played every minute of the historical season for LCFC, and did so as captain. He marshaled the Foxes’ backline against some of the best players in the world; they would only allow 11 Premier League goals. He led Leicester City to one of the most remarkable seasons in the history of professional sports.

Speaking with the Leicester City official website, the 32-year-old had this to say regarding his new contract: “To commit my future to Leicester City is a wonderful feeling…Lifting that Premier League trophy was a moment I will never forget and it’s still sinking in. Now we’ve go to give it everything to defend it as well as showing what we can do in the Champions League.”

Morgan is well liked and well respected among his teammates, coaches, and the club administration. LCFC manager Claudio Ranieri heaped praise on his captain after the signing: “Wes is a leader and a warrior. I’m so happy that he’s committed his future to Leicester City Football Club.”

The championship season certainly raised the profile of the Jamaican international. Morgan went on to garner further attention as part of his home country’s Copa America squad this summer, but not necessarily for what he did on the pitch: He was unable to take the field for Jamaica’s first group game against Venezuela because he was “tired” from celebrating LCFC’s championship after partying in London and Thailand.

The new deal will keep the Leicester City captain at King Power Stadium through June 2019.
