4. Geovany Soto to Toronto Blue Jays or Texas Rangers
Finding a taker for catcher Geovany Soto, who will be a free agent after this season, could prove to be a tad bit difficult. He has had success this season (120 OPS+) but it has come in just 22 games as of July 17. The catching market is a bit weak, especially if the Milwaukee Brewers don’t trade Jonathan Lucroy. That said, the Toronto Blue Jays are likely desperate enough to be interested in Soto. So are the Texas Rangers.
Toronto has gotten very little production at the plate from their catchers. Russell Martin (75 OPS+) and Josh Thole (27 OPS+) have been liabilities at the plate. Due to the Jays having R.A. Dickey, Thole is a necessity on the roster. Still, Soto could provide some offense behind the plate if the Jays are willing to go with three catchers on their roster.
Texas has gotten minimal production from Bobby Wilson and Robinson Chirinos. Soto would give them a more competent everyday starter and give their lineup a much needed boost.
The Angels wouldn’t be able to get much for Soto. However, the Blue Jays and Rangers are probably the contenders most in need of catching. Smart teams take advantage of things like that. Let’s see if Los Angeles does.
