MLB Trade Deadline: 5 moves Angels should make

3. Trade Jered Weaver
Starting pitcher Jered Weaver will be a free agent at the end of the 2016 season. Sadly, his career is likely close to being over. His velocity has dropped significantly and he has a 5.27 ERA. That ERA has risen in each season starting in 2012. However, Weaver likely has at least some value as a back end of the rotation starter or as a mop up man in the bullpen.
A switch to the National League could be good for Weaver. He wouldn’t have to be facing a designated hitter. The question is, which NL team would be willing to give up anything of value for Weaver? There’s a good chance that they won’t be able to get anything truly meaningful for Weaver. That said, it’s better to get something, no matter how tiny it is, than get nothing.
Perhaps the Pittsburgh Pirates would take a chance on him? They could use a rotation upgrade as well as some bullpen help. If they’re going to pull off a playoff run, they’ll need to take some risks at the trade deadline.
Another option could be the Chicago Cubs. They have the money to burn to take on his salary. Also, they will most likely have a huge division lead by the trade deadline. They could give Weaver a long leash and see if he can get back to anything resembling what he was in 2013 or even 2014.
