The 2016 Summer Olympics are on the way, with a host nation for the athletic competition in place. Who will be hosting the Summer Games and what are some of the host venues for the games?
On Friday, Aug. 5, the 2016 Summer Olympics officially get going with the Opening Ceremony including performers and the traditional “Parade of Nations.” Many viewers might be wondering “Where are the 2016 Summer Olympics?” in addition to the various venues that will host the different sports competitions.
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil is the official host nation for the latest Olympics. Barra de Tijuca will serve as the host area for most of the venues in the competition. The various stadiums or arenas that will accommodate competitors and spectators will include Radical Park, Maria Lenk Aquatic Center, Rio Olympic Arena, Water Sports Centre, and Maracana Stadium which will host the Opening Ceremony.
The cities of Sao Paulo, Belo Horizonte, Salvador, Brasilia and Manaus will also lend their football arenas to host Olympics soccer games, also known as “football” internationally.
While Brazil is certainly proud to be hosting the event, the nation has received plenty of criticism as a host site. This is due to health safety concerns over the Zika virus, Guanabara Bay pollution, and the controversial federal government situation. Many athletes expressed their own concerns over participating due to the health risks and withdrew from competing in the games.
Nonetheless, the games will go on, and Rio de Janeiro will serve as the host nation. The 2016 Summer Olympics should still receive plenty of interest from all around the world over various sports including basketball, swimming, track and field and gymnastics.
