Second Baseman

High-Salary Option: Jose Altuve-Houston Astros (4,200): Altuve has started the second half as hot as any hitter in the Major Leagues going 14-24 (.583) with two doubles, a triple, and a home run over the last week.  He has collected multiple hits in four straight games to raise his league-leading batting average to .357 and he has a great .990 OPS. Tonight, he comes home after his big road trip as he faces Matt Shoemaker who he is 7-17 (.412) against in his career with a double and a pair of homers.  He’s a great investment if you can afford his 4K+ salary at 2B.

High-Salary Option: Jason Kipnis-Clevleand Indians (4,200): If you can’t quite squeeze Altuve under your cap or want to avoid going against Shoemaker, Kipnis is a very solid alternative who has posted at least 12 fantasy points in seven of his last ten games.  He enters tonight’s games at Camden Yards 23-66 (.348) this month with five homers, seven RBI, and 14 runs scored.

Mid-Range Option: Jonathan Schoop-Baltimore Orioles  (3,700): On the other side of that same matchup, Schoop makes sense against Trevor Bauer after going 2-5 with a double, run scored and two RBI yesterday against the Yankees.  He has at least 18 fantasy points in four of his last ten games after that 19.2 fantasy point performance and has hit second in the O’s last few games  I like his potential to produce from the #2 spot in the lineup, and I think he makes a good play if he bats there again tonight against Trevor Bauer and the Indians.  Schoop has a .838 OPS on the season, a .901 OPS at home, and a 3-5 career mark against Bauer with three RBI.

Mid-Range Option: Daniel Murphy-Washington Nationals (3,600): Murphy has been playing more 1B with Ryan Zimmerman out, but it doesn’t seem to affect his offensively production as he continues to crush the ball for the Nationals.  He is 18-53 (.340) this month with four homers and 16 RBI. He comes into tonight’s favorable matchup with a nine-game hitting streak and a very affordable price. ∗∗

High Value Option: Brandon Phillips-Cincinnati Reds (2,700): Phillips missed a few games last week with a calf strain, but he has hit safely in each of his three games since returning and now has a nine-game hitting streak coming into tonight’s matchup against Archie Bradley and the D-Backs.  Phillips has gone 14-50 (.280) this month with a pair of doubles, but he’s a very affordable alternative in a ballpark that can produce plenty of runs in Cincinnati tonight.∗∗

High Value Option: Howie Kendrick-Los Angeles Dodgers (2,500): Another under-priced veteran tonight is Howie Kendrick of the Dodgers who has gone 25-62 (.403) in July with a homer, seven RBI, 11 runs scored, and eight walks.  He comes into tonight’s game with a 13-game hitting streak as he gets set to face Michael Wacha and the Cardinals.  Kendrick is 3-5 against Wacha in his career with a walk and a pair of RBI.∗∗∗∗
