Russell Martin injured himself by staying in the sauna for a bit too long

Through the years, there have been some interesting injuries that have occurred with Major League Baseball players. Toronto Blue Jays catcher Russell Wilson found out on Thursday that staying in the sauna too long can be hazardous to your health.

Manager John Gibbons confirmed the news when speaking with reporters on Friday.

Gibbons wasted no time blowing the whistle on his catcher. He could’ve said it was an on-field incident or that he could’ve injured himself while working out. But instead he went with the comical truth of he just stayed in the sauna too long.

As a result, Martin will miss the Blue Jays’ weekend set with the Seattle Mariners. While his offensive production hasn’t been exceptional this year, his defensive work has been a huge addition to the team. He’s helped the team stay a minimal 1½ games back in the AL East, behind the Orioles and division-leading Red Sox.

Josh Thole will be filling in behind the plate this weekend. In 33 games this season, Thole has a home run and five RBI to his credit. However, he has struck out 22 times across 81 at-bats. His .160 average at the plate won’t exactly push their production, but it gives him a weekend of playing time to get some improvement.

This registers on the weird injury list, ranking up there with a stadium vendor that took a foul ball to his backside this week, and an older classic of Sammy Sosa hurting his back after sneezing.
