Drew Brees and the New Orleans Saints haven’t discussed a new deal for their franchise quarterback in months and Brees will likely enter training camp without a contract.

Drew Brees is nearing the end of what will be a career that ends in Canton, OH in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

But, he still has some gas left in the tank for the New Orleans Saints and would like to get a new deal done between he and the team.

According to Brees, those talks haven’t taken place in months.

“Not sure why things have not progressed,” Brees said to ESPN’s Mike Triplett about a new contract.

“They made an offer in March, we made an offer shortly thereafter. And besides the Josh Norman deal (when Sean Payton approached Brees about a pay cut to make room for Norman in New Orleans), there has been no talk about a contract since.”

When it comes to Brees and a deal, it’s not about the start of training camp as a deadline for him, but Sept. 11; the start of the NFL season.

“I would say the deadline is the start of the regular season, not training camp,” Brees told Triplett.

This season will mark the final year of Brees’ five-year, $100 million deal that he signed back in July 2012 and his salary cap hit for the Saints will be $30 million. An extension could lower Brees’ cap hit if the two sides can get something done.

The issue for Brees’ camp is that he’s already 37 years old and has shown a few signs of slowing down over the past few years. It would make sense for New Orleans to hold off on a mega extension to end Brees’ career, but for what Brees has done for the Saints organization since his arrival in 2006, a “legacy” deal could be in order for Brees before Week 1.
