How about a homecoming story to ignite a playoff run? Beltran is 39 years old, and he is a free agent at the end of this season. It is possible it is the last for Beltran. What better way than to end it as a productive player and a spark plug for the team he began his career with.

Beltran is .hitting 304 this year with an .898 OPS, and 20 home runs. He is having a big impact at the plate and of any of the Royals, he would be third on the team in WAR.

The Royals currently have Paul Orlando in right field and are getting almost nothing out of Alex Gordon this year. Lorenzo Cain is injured, but even when he comes back the Royals are going to need help in the outfield if they want to remain competitive this year.

If it means getting a prospect in return for Beltran, the Yankees will probably be fine when it comes to eating most of his salary for this season. For the Royals, it becomes a deal that costs them next to nothing financially, and is only a risk in the pedigree of prospect in which they send. Beltran has a no-trade clause but would surely be fine in heading back to Kansas City for a run this season. The Royals have the majority of the leverage, but would really get a nice pay off if they were to acquire Beltran for this stretch run.
