Fantasy Baseball: Promotion of David Dahl

In what has been an exciting weekend of baseball trade rumors surrounding the Yankees bullpen, it might have gone missed that the weekend also saw 3 eagerly awaited promotions to the major leagues for Alex Bregman, Braden Shipley and David Dahl. We as fantasy baseball fans love promotions.

If you had read my two previous articles you would have already seen the lowdown on Alex Bregman and Braden Shipley, but what of the 3rd member of the promotion club David Dahl?

After having battled health concerns since being drafted 10th overall back in 2012, Concerns which lead to the Rockies outfield prospect having his spleen removed,  Dahl seems to have put the injury concerns behind him and enjoyed a highly productive season which started in AA and is about to make his mark on the major leagues.

News came on Sunday that Dahl was to be rewarded with his outstanding 2016 campaign with a roster spot for the upcoming Orioles trip, a campaign which has seen the former high school phenom hit 18 HR’s, swipe 17 bases and triple slash an impressive .314/.394/.564 between AA and AAA. Just as impressive was the Alabama native’s instant adjustment to AAA in which over his 16 games hit 5 long balls at an average of .484 and a whopping OPS of 1.417.

A large part of David Dahl’s success at the plate this season has been as a result of greater plate discipline allowing him to see better pitches and work the count. During his time in AA in 2015 Dahl had a miniscule 3.6% walk rate over 302 plate appearances, yet a year on in 2016 raised that walk rate to 11.7% in a similar number of plate appearances in his time for the AA Isotopes earlier in the season, a walk rate nearly sustained in his brief spell at AAA at 8.7%.

It is unclear whether David Dahl is here to stay, or whether the promotion is as a result of the Rockies having an upcoming series at Baltimore which will afford the team to play a DH, but with the trade deadline looming, and the uncertainty of Carlos Gonzalez and Charlie Blackmon’s Rockies futures, Dahl has exactly the kind of power/speed skill set which is destined to succeed at the hitter friendly Coors Field.
