Kevin Durant is booed at Staples Center in Team USA game
By Matt Couden
NBA star Kevin Durant was booed during a Team USA exhibition game at Staples Center, and he didn’t even realize.
After his move to the Golden State Warriors, Kevin Durant is now one of the NBA’s villains, whether he is embracing it or not. On Sunday night, Durant was part of a Team USA exhibition game against China and while most of the players received plenty of support, Durant drew boos from portions of the crowd.
According to the Associated Press, Durant didn’t even notice the boos during introductions. After saying “the crowd here tonight was great, so hopefully it’s just as good at Oracle,” Durant was told about the booing. Durant seemed oblivious to it, which is probably a good sign given the sort of reception he’s going to get away from home this coming season. When asked about it, Durant responded, “No, I didn’t hear it. I did? Huh. I didn’t hear it.”
The former Oklahoma City Thunder player made major waves during the offseason as a highly-coveted free agent. Among the teams that courted him were the Houston Rockets, Boston Celtics and Golden State Warriors. The Los Angeles Clippers, who play their home games at Staples Center, were also on the short list.
The Warriors ultimately won the battle for Durant, adding the small forward to an already high-powered and talented lineup. The move, unsurprisingly, didn’t sit well with a lot of fans. Durant was considered a villain for leaving his longtime team in order to win a title with the team he had just lost to in this year’s Western Conference Finals.
With that said, Durant is certainly one of the top stars in the league today and also one of the veteran players on Team USA’s Olympic squad. One would think that even if it’s an exhibition game, fans should be respectful of Team USA, as they will be competing on behalf of the country, not for their individual NBA teams.
