4. New York Mets
It may be a tough sell for Mets fans to bet on another team’s aging franchise third baseman, but Longoria would give the Mets an offensive punch they absolutely need right now. So while the Mets have David Wright potentially eyeing a return from neck and back injuries, it seems like it would be a safe play to have a backup plan at third base.
In the here and now, the Mets reached for Jose Reyes to play third after being released by the Colorado Rockies. It has not been the worst experiment, but he has had ups and downs getting back into the swing of things. That said, it is unlikely the Mets will be looking to extend him this offseason even if Wright is unable to return.
Reyes was a former shortstop, and with Asdrubal Cabrera and Neil Walker at shortstop and second base, it is not like either has to start every day. Cabrera is hitting .263, Walker is hitting. 233, and of them all Longoria is easily the best defender. The Mets can mix and match Reyes, Walker and Cabrera in the middle infield, and at least have a power punch behind Yoenis Cespedes this season.
If Wright is to come back, it is not like Longoria is untradeable this off-season. If the Mets really want a chance at this division or at the Wild Card, they need to go for a move like this.
