5 NFL teams desperate enough to sign Nick Foles
By John Buhler
When franchise quarterback Andrew Luck is healthy, he’s a top-five passer in the NFL and capable of leading the Indianapolis Colts to deep playoff runs in the AFC. However, he did miss half of the 2015 NFL season with a lacerated kidney. Indianapolis stumbled in his absence to an 8-8 record and missed the AFC Playoffs.
Now that Matt Hasselbeck has called it a career on the gridiron in favor of one in a Bristol television studio, the Colts have two weak backup quarterbacks in Scott Tolzien and Stephen Morris. How are the Colts going to win games if Luck gets hurt again? They don’t have the personnel to overcome an injury to easily their best player.
Foles would be at least serviceable as the No. 2 quarterback on the Colts’ depth chart. Tolzien would probably challenge him as Luck’s primary backup in 2016. Foles could succeed in a largely conservative 2016 Colts offense under offensive coordinator Rob Chudzinski and new quarterbacks coach Brian Schottenheimer.
The 2016 NFL season for the Colts hangs so much on Luck’s health. Poor front office decisions have left Luck with a mediocre roster that he is expected to take to AFC Championship Games and Super Bowls. If he gets hurt again, what are the Colts going to do? Foles is at the very least capable of keeping Indianapolis in games, much like what Hasselbeck did in 2015.
Next: 2. Dallas Cowboys.
