The Cleveland Browns will know who their starting quarterback will be before preseason starts.
It appears that 2016 will be the year where the Cleveland Browns will look to have some real stability at the quarterback position. While a regular season for the Browns is typified by having their quarterbacks rotate on a carousel, newly appointed coach Hue Jackson will name a starter right from the get-go.
According to Mary Kay Cabot of The Plain-Dealer, Jackson will decide who among Robert Griffin III, Austin Davis, Josh McCown, and Cody Kessler will be the starting quarterback for Cleveland, with RG3 expected to be the odds-on favorite.
Even though Griffin rode the bench last year with the Washington Redskins, he is the most talented quarterback among the group, and while he has yet to show the potential he flashed during his rookie season, a reunion with his Baylor teammate Josh Gordon in Week 5 might be enough to provide that spark.
Both Austin Davis and Josh McCown played for the Browns last season, and while McCown was good in spurts, he got injured way too often, while Davis was only put in so that they wouldn’t have to resort to Johnny Manziel.
Even though they’ll name a starter before preseason, we should expect to see more than one QB suit up during the preseason. That’s usually when teams get to test out all of their quarterbacks, and if Cody Kessler shows flashes of potential, then Griffin – or whoever they name as their starter – would likely go into the season serving as a mentor to the rookie.
Even though the playoffs are still a long shot for the Browns, fans will be heading into this season with more optimism than they’ve had in the past few years, and a lot of that has to do with the stability they appear to have at quarterback.
