The trade that sent Andrew Cashner to the Miami Marlins is bigger than expected, as the San Diego Padres are getting Jarred Cosart, among others.
News broke this morning that the Miami Marlins acquired Andrew Cashner and Colin Rea from the San Diego Padres in exchange for top prospect Josh Naylor. However, the trade had the potential to be even bigger. According to Ken Rosenthal, it will be bigger, as the Padres will be getting, among other pieces, starting pitcher Jarred Cosart and reliever Carter Capps.
Complete deal: Cashner, Rea, Guerrero to #Marlins. Cosart, Castillo, Capps, Naylor to #Padres. Deal pending review of medicals.

Along with Cashner and Rea, the Marlins will also be receiving Tayron Guerrero from the Padres. He has appeared in one MLB game this season with a 4.50 ERA in two innings. He is expected to either be sent down to the minors or be a long man in the Marlins bullpen.
The Padres will be receiving Cosart, Capps, Naylor, and Luis Castillo. Castillo was ranked as the Marlins’ number six prospect according to MLB.com. He has excellent velocity and has the potential to be an excellent bullpen arm with his strikeout rate.
Cosart should give the Padres some rotation depth, as they gave up both Cashner and Rea in the deal. He is arbitration eligible after this season and will be a free agent following the 2019 season. Cosart should keep a rotation spot warm for the Padres’ other starters. They could easily non-tender him if they don’t need him after this season.
The big pieces in this deal are Capps, Naylor, and Castillo. Capps had a 1.08 ERA for the Marlins in 2015 and had Tommy John surgery in March.
