NBA free agency: Players that signed with the wrong team
3. Evan Turner — Portland Trail Blazers
Find me someone that likes the Evan Turner deal with the Portland Trail Blazers and I’ll show you someone who hasn’t been paying attention. Despite not being exceptional at really any part of the game of basketball, the Trail Blazers forked over a ton of cash and a four-year deal to the former Boston Celtics card. But he makes this list not because Portland is paying him entirely too much money, but because the fit doesn’t make a bit of sense for the Blazers or for Turner.
On the part of the Trail Blazers, it’s quite baffling to even consider why they would want Turner regardless of what they think of him and regardless of what his talents are. If Portland was planning on re-signing the likes of Allen Crabbe while also locking up C.J. McCollum to a long-term max extension, why in the hell do they need Turner on the roster? All they’re doing there is clogging up the rotation with guys that are being paid a lot of money individually for what their roles are going to be.
And if you’re Turner, you have to wonder why he would want to go into that situation. Obviously the money that they offered him is part of the appeal as he’s going to be a paid man, but from a basketball sense his role is going to be questionable from Day 1 and he doesn’t exactly fit into how the Trail Blazers play either. In short, the Turner deal might be the overall worst signing for everyone involved when you consider everything about it.
