NFL Training Camp: When do San Francisco 49ers start?
Taking a look at when the San Francisco 49ers start training camp in 2016
The San Francisco 49ers had a disappointing season in 2015, finishing in last place in the NFC West with a 5-11 record. However, with a new head coach in Chip Kelly and a revamped defense led by first round pick DeForest Buckner, San Francisco should improve in 2016.
An interesting training camp battle to watch will be the battle for starting quarterback. Colin Kaepernick is the favorite to win the job, but backup quarterback Blaine Gabbert could easily sneak in and grab the starting job. First round pick Joshua Garnett could win a starting guard job out of camp as well, but he will have competition.
Buckner should help revive a stagnant pass rush that had just 28 sacks in 2015, the fourth fewest in the NFL. He should also help beef up a rush defense that allowed the fourth most rushing yards in the NFL in 2015. NaVorro Bowman will look to keep going strong as he had 154 tackles and 2.5 sacks in 2015.
Their offense will be led by wide receiver Torrey Smith (663 receiving yards and four touchdowns), wide receiver Quinton Patton (394 receiving yards and one touchdown), and running back Carlos Hyde (470 rushing yards and three touchdowns). Look for sixth round pick Kelvin Taylor to potentially earn some carries with a strong training camp.
The 49ers open training camp on July 30 when both rookies and veterans will report to training camp. They will hold training camp at the SAP Training Facility in Santa Clara, California.
