The Texans still haven’t set DeAndre Hopkins’s future in stone. He’ll return to the team anyways.

DeAndre Hopkins just had the best season of his career in 2015, catching 111 balls for 1,521 yards and 11 touchdowns. He’s grown into one of the premier wide receivers in the league, and was selected to his first Pro Bowl last year. Despite all of these accolades, the Texans are not securing his future just yet. Hopkins has been holding out since Saturday, but according to ESPN, that will be changing in around an hour.

Right now, DeAndre Hopkins is making a million a year, which is an obscenely low price for a player of his caliber. If the Texans attempt to keep him on at a bargain price or try to low ball him at the beginning of the negotiations, they might lose him to a wide receiver-starved franchise.

Hopkins is easily worth ten times what he’s making right now. The Texans were 9-7 despite playing with four quarterbacks, making it to the Wild Card round before being shut out by the Kansas City Chiefs, 30-0.

If the Texans want to remain competitive on offense beyond 2016, they’ll need to pay Hopkins his money. Their offense is at a precarious position as they break in new quarterback Brock Osweiler, and the rapport between the QB and guys like Hopkins will be crucial moving forward. If the Texans want to continue to take steps forward instead of treading water, they’ll need to find a way to get Hopkins his money before another team does.
