The Milwaukee Brewers and Cleveland Indians thought that they had a deal that would allow the rebuilding Brewers to trade star catcher Jonathan Lucroy to the contending Indians for no less than three players, including a top prospect. However, Lucroy had other ideas. He has a no-trade clause and has reportedly chosen to invoke it to veto the trade.
Why would Lucroy veto a trade to the Indians? Who knows. Maybe he enjoys the city of Milwaukee and he would like to keep his family there. Perhaps he just outright hates the city of Cleveland or would rather play for the New York Mets or Texas Rangers, both of whom have expressed interest in him.
For whatever reason, Lucroy vetoed the trade. It’s his right since the Indians were on his no-trade list. Lucroy would have been going to the American League Central leading Indians who just traded for Andrew Miller, so it’s a bit interesting that he vetoed the trade.
The Indians still need to get a catcher with Yan Gomes out for the rest of the season. Where do they go from here? They could trade for someone like Derek Norris of the San Diego Padres. Norris isn’t of the same caliber as Lucroy, but he would be an upgrade over their current options. Perhaps they contact the Yankees about catcher Brian McCann? Regardless, this is a decision that shakes up the MLB trade deadline.
