Fans of the New York Giants have to be holding their breath as their franchise’s best player in Pro Bowl wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. had to be carted off the field on Sunday’s training camp practice after colliding with recently acquired cornerback Janoris Jenkins on a deep ball drill.
The Giants don’t have a scheduled practice on Monday and no information has been given at this time to Beckham’s condition after his collision with Jenkins. Should Beckham miss any extended time for the Giants, this could be devastating for New York’s 2016 NFL season.
Since winning Super Bowl XLVII over the New England Patriots at the end of the 2011 NFL season, the Giants have failed to reach the NFC Playoffs each of the last four NFL seasons. New York made several splashes in 2016 NFL free agency, including getting Jenkins from the now Los Angeles Rams. However, New York will have a tough time winning the NFC East over either the Dallas Cowboys or the Washington Redskins this season, even with a healthy Beckham.
2016 also marks a change of the guard within the Giants organization, as longtime head coach and two-time Super Bowl Champion Tom Coughlin has retired in favor of an office gig with the NFL, leaving Coughlin’s offensive coordinator Ben McAdoo to assume head coaching responsibilities.
The Giants will need to rely on their more than capable passing game with the never-hurt Eli Manning at quarterback. Manning is a bit of a risk/reward type of passer, but has led the Giants to two Super Bowl victories. New York needs the Manning to Beckham connection to be in full force if the Giants want to hold their own in a competitive NFC this upcoming season.
