Yankees continue bullpen revamping by picking up Tyler Clippard from Arizona.
Tyler Clippard returns to the team that drafted him: the New York Yankees. Clippard spent part of the 2007 season in the Bronx, but struggled in six starts. Now he returns as a former All Star who was struggling in Arizona. Here are the details of the deal:
The Yankees need some bullpen arms after moving both Aroldis Chapman and Andrew Miller. Dellin Betances is the clear-cut closer, but Clippard could be the sole eighth inning option.
Clippard was 2-3 with a 4.30 ERA in 40 appearances with the Diamondbacks. That said, Clippard’s career ERA is 2.97. If he can get down to near those numbers, this is a win for the Yankees. Clippard has racked up 658 strikeouts in 599.2 career innings. There is value to be had here if he can pitch well in New York.
In return, Arizona picks up 23 year old Vicente Campos, who has a 9-3 record with a 3.20 ERA in his rapid ascent through the minors this year. Given the struggles of the back of the Arizona rotation (Edwin Jackson? Really? Are they that desperate?), it is entirely possible that Campos will be in the major leagues before the end of the year.
If he does make the jump, he may be worth a look in deeper leagues. He has 420 strikeouts in 458.2 career minor league innings. We will have to see how he fares in the brutal Pacific Coast League, but he could instantly vault into the Arizona rotation with a few good minor league starts.
For the Yankees, retooling their bullpen was more important. If Clippard can get back to his Washington Nationals form, the Yankees will be very pleased. So will fantasy players!
