DraftKings MLB Picks For August 1

Trade deadline day is upon us. We have eight games today besides the game of cat and mouse that leads up to the 4 pm Eastern deadline. Are there bargain stemming from trade rumors? Of course, none of these are official until announced, but you definitely want to keep an eye on the players moving. There will likely be some fabulous one day bargains out there.

NOTE: these picks are based solely on statistics. Some players have never faced their opponents, or have very little experience against them. I am not saying that none of those are good picks. The highest scorer of the day could be someone with no experience against his opponent. This is based on statistical analysis only. If you have a gut feeling, then by all means, follow that. This is not an exact science. The best lineups usually have a mix of proven stats and hot players.

Logan Verrett has never faced the Yankees. He does own a good 3.29 ERA at home, and the Yankees offense isn’t what it used to be, but his lack of strikeouts gives you little margin for error.

Archie Bradley has never faced the Nationals. However, he has a 5.15 ERA at home. He has given up only seven runs in four starts since the All Star Break, but there is quite a bit of risk here. Especially against Strasburg.

Adam Conley has never faced the Cubs. He has had a solid season, posting a 7-5 record with a 3.38 ERA. The 1.30 WHIP paints a cautionary tale though. His ERA is also a full run higher on the road. You can likely do better, even in a short slate.

Jarred Cosart has never faced the Brewers. Will his Padres tenure go better than his 5.95 ERA in four starts with the Marlins? This will be a decent litmus test that you should likely avoid.

Eduardo Rodriguez has never faced the Mariners, but he is clearly not the pitcher he was last year. His ERA is now up to 6.51. Even in Seattle, don’t take this risk.

Jose Berrios made his major league debut against the Indians on April 27th. It didn’t go so well. He gave up five runs on six hits and two walks while striking out five in four innings. He will look to do better this time around, but you should make him prove something before rolling with him in DFS lineups.

Best Bets:

Stephen Strasburg ($12,900): The Diamondbacks are hitting a respectable .246 against Strasburg in 69 at bats, but they have only scored four runs while striking out 18 times. In a short slate, that gives him top billing by a fairly wide margin. Want another reason to use him? How about that stellar 1.72 road ERA in eight starts.

Kyle Hendricks ($9,500): The Marlins have managed only a .197 average against Hendricks in 61 at bats with eight runs (half are by Justin Bour, who is on the DL) and 16 strikeouts. Hendricks has had a brilliant season (9-7, 2.39 ERA). There is no reason that wont continue here today.

Honorable Mention:

Danny Duffy ($10,900): The Rays are hitting a pretty good .268 against Duffy, but he has held them to six runs in 71 at bats. The 15 strikeouts is a bit low, and I have a feeling that Duffy will have a hard time living up to that price tag. If he can do it though, it would be against the Rays.

Jimmy Nelson ($7,800): The Padres are only 7-33(.212) against Nelson with just one run (even that was by Jon Jay, who is on the disabled list) and six strikeouts. This is another very favorable matchup for Nelson. The problem is that his defense has failed him. Nelson has given up eight unearned runs in his last two starts!

Dark Horses:

Doug Fister ($6,600): The Blue Jays are hitting .262 against Fister in 84 at bats, but he has done an excellent job limiting the damage. The Jays only have five runs in those 84 at bats, but they also only have 15 strikeouts. There is risk involved whenever you take a pitcher against the Blue Jays. Can Fister keep up his solid numbers against the Jays. Want to bet on it?

James Paxton ($6,300): Paxton dominated the Red Sox in his start against them last year. He pitched eight shutout innings, allowing only four hits while striking out two. The strikeouts are low, but is he really that far removed from last May 17th? For this price, it may be worth finding out if he can do it again.

You have heard our FanDuel experts Matt Rogers and Brian Tulloch talk about “stacking” pieces of a lineup against certain pitchers. Here are the stacks that could work well on DraftKings today, based on past statistics.

Lorenzo Cain ($3,600) is 5-7 with a double, a homer, and four RBI against Chris Archer. Jarrod Dyson ($3,000) is 2-8 with a walk, a homer, and two RBI against Archer. Alcides Escobar ($2,700) is 8-12 with two doubles and a RBI. Kendrys Morales ($2,400) is 8-13(.615) with a walk, three doubles, a homer, and five RBI against Archer.

Brandon Guyer ($3,300) is 3-5 with a solo homer against Danny Duffy. Curt Casali ($2,600) is 1-2 with a solo homer. Brad Miller ($3,600) is 3-10 with a triple and two RBI.

Paul Goldschmidt ($4,500) is 5-13(.385) with a walk, two doubles, and two RBI against Stephen Strasburg. David Peralta ($3,200) is 3-4 with a walk and a solo homer.

Brian Dozier ($3,800) is 10-21(.476) with two walks, five doubles, two homers, and six RBI against Danny Salazar. He is the only Twins player worth using today, and he is cheap enough to provide a good bargain.

Jose Bautista ($4,100) is 6-13(.462) with two walks, three doubles, and two RBI against Doug Fister. Josh Donaldson ($5,200) is 3-5 with a double and a RBI against Fister.

Asdrubal Cabrera ($2,900) is 6-17(.353) with a walk, a double, and a solo homer against CC Sabathia. James Loney ($3,300) is only 5-23(.217), but he does have a homer and three RBI.

Marcell Ozuna ($3,600) is 2-7 with two walks, a double, and three RBI against Kyle Hendricks.
