Trade talks between the New York Mets and Cincinnati Reds for outfielder Jay Bruce are heating up.

MLB Network’s Jon Morosi has reported that the New York Mets are still actively in the hunt for Cincinnati Reds OF Jay Bruce, citing sources.

This news comes after Jeff Passan reported that the Mets were the frontrunners in the Jay Bruce sweepstakes, but that the Texas Rangers and San Francisco Giants were still interested in the outfielder.

The 29-year-old right fielder is hitting .265/.316/.559, with 25 home runs and 80 runs batted in so far this season. He’s currently on pace for a stellar slash-line of .265/.316/.559 with 39 dingers and 125 RBI.

Bruce could be just what the Mets need to introduce some offense into their enigmatic lineup. The Mets have scored the third-fewest runs in the MLB during the 2016 campaign, and are currently struggling to score against Colorado Rockies’ pitching staff that has given up the fourth-most runs in the Majors.

The Mets don’t necessarily need outfield help, so it would make sense for Bruce to move to first base, where the All-Star outfielder has a some experience. The Mets currently sit 2.5 games out of a wildcard spot in the N.L. and the addition of Bruce could help bolster their offense for a late season charge, much like Yoenis Cespedes last season.

In return for Bruce, the Reds are looking for offensive prospects, but no names have been floated around just yet.

With the Cincinnatti Reds out of the wildcard race, don’t be surprised to see them trade away more than just Jay Bruce.
