The Miami Marlins are said to be livid that Colin Rea was injured, and will send him back to San Diego.
The Miami Marlins are sending Colin Rea back to the San Diego Padres after the right-hander was forced to leave his first Miami start with an elbow injury, according to Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports.
Rea was acquired along with Andrew Cashner and minor leaguer Tayron Guerrero from the Padres for righties Jarred Cosart and Carter Capps, and prospects Josh Naylor and Luis Castillo on Friday. In his first outing, Rea lasted just 3.1 innings and faced 11 batters in the Marlins 11-0 whitewash of the Cardinals in Miami. He only allowed one hit and struck out four, but could not continue.
Cashner was considered the centerpiece of the deal, while Rea was believed to be a serviceable starter with a 5-5 record in 19 games, with a 4.98 ERA and 1.46 WHIP. He had complained about elbow pain while warming up before the game.
As a result, the Padres are sending the hard throwing right-hander Castillo back to the Marlins. The 23-year-old Dominican was 7-3 with a 2.25 ERA and 0.97 WHIP in 20 games for the club’s High-A affiliate, the Jupiter Hammerheads of the Florida State League. He has an overall 16-15 mark in five minor league seasons, striking out 325 in 348.1 innings.
