MLB Trade Rumors: Ivan Nova traded to Pittsburgh Pirates
According to Jon Heyman, the Pittsburgh Pirates have acquired Ivan Nova from the New York Yankees at the 2016 MLB trade deadline.
The Pittsburgh Pirates were looking to add something to their rotation as they are looking to compete for one of the two wild card spots available in the National League. They have reportedly acquired starting pitcher Ivan Nova from the New York Yankees. The return is players to be named later.
Nova could serve as a bottom of the rotation starting pitcher, but he’s not that impressive. The 29 year old right hander has struggled since posting a 3.10 ERA in 2013. Since then, he has posted an 8.27 ERA in 2014, 5.07 ERA in 2015, and a 4.90 ERA in 2016. He is been in and out of the Yankees rotation this season. Nova’s 5.09 FIP isn’t that encouraging.

That said, this could still be a solid move for the Pirates. They have had a lot of luck in turning bad pitchers into good ones. Most recently, Francisco Liriano and Edinson Volquez have been the beneficiaries. It’s a bit strange seeing the Pirates and Yankees trade with their usual roles reversed. Usually, the Yankees would trade for the Pirates’ players as they looked to upgrade for a playoff run. This time, it’s the other way around.
Nova has 75 strikeouts in 97 1/3 innings this season.
