Hill has been something of a journeyman the last few years. The 12-year MLB veteran was 9-3 with a 2.25 ERA and a 1.092 WHIP in 14 starts for the 2016 Athletics. He’ll be a free agent this winter after signing a one-year deal with Oakland worth $6 million.
Reddick had been a staple in the Oakland outfield for the last five seasons. In 68 games for the 2016 Athletics, Reddick hit .296 with a .368 OBP and a .449 SLG. He had eight home runs and 28 RBIs and will hit free agency this winter after signing a one-year deal worth $6.85 to stay in Oakland.
Oakland yields three prospects in return for three right-handed pitchers: Jharel Cotton, Grant Holmes and Frankie Montas. With Oakland in last place in the American League West with a 47-58 record at the August 1 MLB trade deadline, it’s understandable why general manager Billy Beane would want to sell off some of his more interesting major league players, like Hill and Reddick.
Adding both Hill and Reddick should help the Dodgers stay relevant in the National League postseason picture. At 59-46 at the MLB trade deadline, the Dodgers trail their arch rival San Francisco Giants by two games in the NL West, but hold a two game lead for the top Wild Card spot in the NL.
