Each year, the MLB Trade Deadline serves as a way for contending teams to get better instantly. For some teams, they are the sellers, trading away veteran players for some young prospects. In 2016, some of the bigger named prospects were moved, sending some of the best young talents to new destinations.

For the first time in a long time, the New York Yankees were sellers at the Trade Deadline, sending away star players like Carlos Beltran, Andrew Miller, and Aroldis Chapman. In return, the Yankees loaded up their farm system, which is now one of the better ones in baseball. Other teams have come out of nowhere to be legitimate contenders, like the Cleveland Indians and Miami Marlins, and for once, were buyers.

There is no actual way to tell if a prospect is going to become a superstar. Each draft is loaded with top prospects who fizzle out in the minor leagues. However, for some prospects, they flourish in the minors, becoming the kind of major leaguer the scouts felt they could be.

As the calendar inches ever closer to October, there were plenty of teams who loaded themselves up for the playoff run. And while the big-name players moved are always certain to be the big news of the deadline season, it is the prospects that will eventually carry a team for years to come.

The star players who were traded have gotten a ton of publicity, so let’s take a look at the 5 best prospects traded.
