MLB Trade Deadline: 5 worst moves
By Matt Couden
Taking a look at the five worst moves made by teams prior to the 2016 MLB Trade Deadline.
During most seasons, the impending MLB Trade Deadline brings plenty of excitement and speculation. Team owners and management are looking to bolster rosters to make a push toward the postseason, or to address any flaws to help their playoff runs. Other squads simply look to unload players for other reasons, realizing their postseason aspirations are futile.
In 2016, the latest MLB Trade Deadline rumors ran wild, particularly when it came to White Sox pitcher Chris Sale. He had been rumored to be on the move, with contenders like the Boston Red Sox and Los Angeles Dodgers both interested in acquiring the All-Star ace. However, once the deadline had arrived, Sale found himself still a part of the Chicago roster in what looks like the team’s attempt to make a push toward next season.
The New York Yankees had a “fire sale” of their own, leaving their fans to wonder about their future. In addition, the Baltimore Orioles, New York Mets and Milwaukee Brewers may have arguably made some poor choices in their dealings. Multiple teams may have been interested in former Brewer Johnathan Lucroy, but in the end, he wound up with the Texas Rangers.
There were certainly winners and losers in the latest MLB trades. Only time will tell which of these moves pay off the most for their respective teams as some are basement dwellers who made head-scratching moves. That said, it’s time to evaluate the five worst moves prior to the 2016 MLB Trade Deadline.
