Nike released a press release on Wednesday and announced that it is done making golf equipment and plans to focus on apparel and footwear with the sport. The brand has been in the golfing world since 1984 but didn’t start making clubs until 2002; shortly after, Tiger Woods began to take over the entire universe with his dominant play.
“We’re committed to being the undisputed leader in golf footwear and apparel,” said Trevor Edwards, president of Nike Brand in a company press release. According to Golf Digest, sources told them that layoffs were announced this afternoon.
It’s been a tough go for the Swoosh for the last couple years. With brand leaders like PING, TaylorMade and Callaway, it’s been difficult for the sporting world’s biggest brand to keep up on the links.
Nike Golf Revenue:
— Darren Rovell (@darrenrovell) August 3, 2016
2011: $623 million
2012: $726 million
2013: $792 million
2014: $789 million
2015: $769 million
2016: $706 million
According to ESPN’s Darren Rovell, it’s unknown at this time what happens with the current Nike equipment users and their deals. Some of those names include four-time major tournament winner Rory McIlroy, Brooks Koepka, Tony Finau, Paul Casey, Michelle Wie, and of course, Tiger Woods.
It’s apparent that Nike will still be involved with golf. They plan to stay in the apparel department, but they’re out when comes to golf balls and clubs. It’s a curious (and rather big) decision for the brand to make, being that Tiger Woods hasn’t been seen on a course since last August.
Woods’ impact on the game is fading without him on the course this season, and with this latest news, Nike’s impact on the game of golf is decreasing by the day.
