The Cal Golden Bears have named Texas Tech transfer Davis Webb their starting quarterback for the 2016 college football season
There’s no escaping the fact that the Cal Golden Bears had a big hole to fill entering the 2016 college football season. With the departure of quarterback and No. 1 overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft Jared Goff, Cal was left with a glaring vacancy at their most important position on the field. However, the Golden Bears had a variety of options to potentially fill the roll coming into practice. In the end, though, they went with a player who has had experience with high-level college football—albeit elsewhere—in Davis Webb.

On Thursday, Cal officially named graduate transfer and former Texas Tech Red Raiders quarterback Davis Webb their starter for the 2016 season:

The 6-5, 224-pound Webb came into a good position with Cal from Texas Tech in regards to scheme and him ultimately winning the starting job. The Red Raiders famously run their high-octane spread system and now the Golden Bears are transitioning into a similar system as well.
While Webb appeared in only five games and threw only 41 passes for Texas Tech last season, he’d shown the ability to be productive in the two previous seasons as the starter, combining for over 5,200 yards passing in addition to 44 touchdowns to only 22 interceptions.
Davis Webb may not be Jared Goff, but the senior (in eligibility terms) does have some buzz about him as an NFL prospect entering his final season. It’ll be interesting to see if this pays off for Cal or if they resort to one of their younger, less experienced options at some point this year.
