While NBA stars such as Kobe Bryant and LeBron James have taken the brunt of the “next Michael Jordan” player debate in recent years, one guy who is never mentioned is Russell Westbrook. However, Michael Jordan himself recently gave an interview in which he drew a comparison between Westbrook and himself, 30 years ago.
MJ made the recent comparisons while promoting his new Air Jordan XXXI kicks. Westbrook just so happens to be the top endorser of the new sneakers. Jordan told Complex with regards to the OKC All-Star:
"“Thirty years ago, that’s me. The attitude, trying to prove myself, showing so much passion for the game of basketball. You see it in his play. You can tell he loves the game, he plays with energy and flair.”"
Westbrook learned of the statement by the G.O.A.T. of the NBA and was naturally surprised and happy to hear it. He would comment with regards to MJ’s praise:
"“That’s crazy. I really don’t know what to say. To have the best player who ever played the game to say that about you as a player and as a person is something that is going to keep me striving.”"
The comments from Jordan arrive not long after NBA superstar LeBron James recently admitted he is chasing a “ghost” that played in Chicago, referring to the mighty legacy Jordan left as the top star of the game. It’s clear that MJ values the traits that Westbrook has in his game, but also obvious he wasn’t saying Westbrook is the next Jordan.
Russ needs a few scoring titles, NBA MVP awards and championship rings before he gets mentioned in those talks.
