2016 Rio Summer Olympics medal count: Day 1 standings

After Day 1 at Rio 2016, a look at the Summer Olympics medal count and the standings by country

Despite it only being the first day of the 2016 Rio Olympics, there’s no time wasted in starting to hand out medals. In fact, one of the first events on Day 1 of the Games resulted in a medal in regards to the women’s shooting competition in the 10m air rifle. After that was won by an American, it was off to the races as respective countries began vying to get to the top of the standings of the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics medal count.

Even on the first day of the Olympics in Rio, there were still 12 gold medals handed out in addition to 12 silvers and 14 bronzes (thanks to the judo events which hand out two bronze medals for each division).

Here’s a look at the 2016 Rio Olympics medal count standings after Day 1 sorted by total medals:

As you can see, the United States earned a silver in the 4x100m Women’s Freestyle Relay in Olympic Swimming, the final event of Day 1, to tie China and Japan atop the standings. However, it’s Hungary and Australia right now that are in the lead in terms of gold medals.

Obviously this is just Day 1 of the Olympics and there is still a ways to go throughout the rest of the competition. However, it’s already shaping up to be quite an exciting race in regards to the Olympics medal count and who will come out on top.
