Is Alex Rodriguez retiring from baseball?
UPDATE: The Yankees have announced that A-Rod will be retiring from baseball. August 12th will be his final game of his career, after which he will retire and join the Yankees front office as an adviser.
This is notable in that A-Rod’s relationship with the Yankees — which has been testy at best over the years — is going to continue. It’s been repaired enough that the team and Rodriguez feel like they can continue this relationship and build it into something we always wanted it to be: successful.
This is the end of an era for the Yankees though, even if A-Rod is being kept around to groom the next generation.

First it was the announcement that Mark Texeria would be retiring from the MLB at the end of the season. Now it appears Alex Rodriguez is on his way out too. A press conference has been called for 11am tomorrow and it’s assumed that it will be an announcement about Alex Rodriguez’s retirement.
According to Ken Rosenthal from FOX Sports, whatever is announced at this press conference tomorrow, it appears to be the end of the road for Alex Rodriguez.
All signs point to this being the end of A-Rod’s career. Only questions are when and how.

That doesn’t really fill us in on whether or not A-Rod is retiring, if he’s been cut or if he’s been pinched again for PEDs. We ran down the possibilities of what this press conference could have been about, and we were half right.
He Tested Positive for PEDs Again and Has Been Released
It’s worth noting that it’s completely unconfirmed what the announcement will be, but unfortunately it’s not outside the realm of possibility that this is another positive PED test for A-Rod.
That’s going to be his legacy in baseball, as he’s twice been pinched from PED use — once by admission — and he’s forever tainted. When he was acquired from the Texas Rangers in the early 2000s, he was supposed to help bring about another Yankee dynasty. Instead he flamed out and buried his career in the Bronx.
Yankees Are Releasing A-Rod
If you had to put money on an option, it’d be this one. A-Rod has almost never been productive for the Yankees but he was always worth keeping around just in case. He’s no longer a weapon nor part of the future and therefore isn’t worth paying.
The Yankees are trying to do something they’ve hardly ever done and that’s rebuild and build a young core of players. A-Rod isn’t a part of that and neither is the tens of millions he’s still owed.
A-Rod is Retiring
This is probably it, while being a combo of the final two options. The likeliest reason for this presser is that A-Rod is being released by the Yankees and he is effectively retiring from baseball.
So prepare for your Monday full of A-Rod hot takes about whether he’s a Hall of Famer or not given his seedy past with PEDs. Or, actually, expect this to be bask page news, which is actually a lot worse than all the takes. There’s nothing worse than have no takes at all, and that’s sadly where A-Rod has forced his legacy to go, as he’s pigeonholed his once promising legacy to be an afterthought in retirement.
That might be the biggest tragedy here of all.
