His potential breakout season may be over before it even started. According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, Detroit Lions TE Eric Ebron was “carted off the practice field with what appeared to be a right lower leg injury.”

NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport tweeted the early word is a potential Achilles injury.

The tenth overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft, Ebron has mostly been disappointing for the Lions through his first two seasons. He has shown flashes of the athleticism and raw receiving ability that made the Lions take him so early, but Ebron has been far too inconsistent.

He played well down the stretch for Detroit last season, bringing in 47 receptions for 537 yards and five touchdowns on the season.

Ebron is a big-time talent with great red zone and deep threat upside at the tight end position. That being said, he has struggled with drops and seems to disappear on the field more often than not.

The Lions are expected to be counting on Ebron to take a larger role with the team in 2016, as they will undoubtedly struggle to replace the production left by the departing Calvin Johnson.

Newcomer Marvin Jones and solid veteran Golden Tate will undoubtedly be counted on to pick up the slack, but the emergence of Ebron from the tight end position would undoubtedly help Matthew Stafford and the offense.

Hopefully, this injury turns out to be nothing too severe, because Ebron is the kind of talent that the Lions’ offense cannot afford to lose.
