The Los Angeles Rams coveted California quarterback Jared Goff with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft. It does not appear, however, that the team is in any hurry to name Goff as the team’s permanent starter for the season.
According to NFL.com, head coach Jeff Fisher plans to start QB Case Keenum in the team’s first preseason game against the Dallas Cowboys.
“[Goff] still has a long way to go before he reaches the standard needed to wrestle the starting job from Keenum,” NFL.com analyst Bucky Brooks said in a recent column from Rams training camp.
For Rams fans, a QB controversy is not a new experience, as no quarterback has started a complete season for the team since Sam Bradford in 2012.
In 2015, the team bounced between quarterbacks Nick Foles and Case Keenum who would take the reins in the second half of the season, completing nearly 61 percent of his passes and tossing four touchdowns in the final five games.
While this might not be the news LA Rams fans wanted to hear, this doesn’t necessarily mean panic for the fanbase. Goff was a part of a California offensive scheme that loosely reflected Baylor’s up-tempo hybrid offense, leaving for a steep learning curve heading into the league.
Brooks believes sitting Goff will help give the QB “time to learn the management skills needed to start for a competitive team.”
