Olympic Boxing 2016: Results for August 6, 2016 (Day 1)

Day One of Olympic Boxing action kicked off Saturday morning with a multitude of exciting fights, followed by an evening session full of high-level competition.

Results for the morning session:

Men’s light flyweight (49kg)

  • (GBR) Galal Yafai def. Fotsala Simplice (COL) via scores of 29-26, 30-25 and 30-25.

Yafai was the more polished fighter, but it was a good fight overall.

  • (COL) Yuberjen Martinez def. Patrick Lourenco (BRA) via scores of 29-28, 30-27×2.

Martinez dominated this fight. No way Lourenco won that first round, but hey, judges will be judges.

  • (ESP) Samuel Carmona def. Artur Hovhannisyan (ARM) via scores of 30-27×3.

Carmona will now move on to face Ireland’s Paddy Barnes, who is a two-time medalist.

Men’s lightweight (60kg)

  • (ITA) Carmine Tommasone def. Lindolfo Delgado (MEX) via scores of 30-27×2 and 29-28.

Carmine Tommasone won the fight, but not in spectacular fashion. He’s a pro-boxer, so more was expected of him.

  • (JPN) Daisuke Narimatsu def. Luis Cabrera (VEN) via scores of 29-28×2 and 28-29.

This was a good, close fight. Decision could have gone either way.

  • (USA) Carlos Balderas def. Berik Adrakhmanov (KAZ) via scores of 29-28×3.

Baldera gets the first win for the USA Boxing team. He has real potential.

Men’s light heavyweight (81kg)

  • (TUR) Mehmet Nadir Unal def. Hassan Saada (MAR) via Saada being out of the olympics.

Saada was arrested earlier in the week for sexual assault allegations.

  • (CRO) Hrvoje Sep def. Abdelrahman Salah Araby (EGY) via scores of 30-27, 27-30 and 29-28.

The judge who gave Araby all three rounds should never be allowed to judge ever again.

Men’s Heavyweight (91kg)

  • (BRA) Juan Nogueira def. Jason Whateley (AUS) via scores of 30-26 and 30-27×2.

Nogueira put on a dominating performance in front of his hometown crowd.

Results from the evening session:

Men’s light flyweight (49kg)

  • (MEX) Joselito Velazquez def. Leandro Blanc (ARG) via scores of 30-27×3.

Velazquez looked very good in this fight. He will move on to face Uzbekistan’s Hasanboy Dusmatov next.

  • (NAM) Mathias Hamunyela def. Rufat Husenov (AZE) via scores of

Decent fight here, judges disagreed on a couple rounds.

  • (USA) Nico Hernandez def Manuel Cappai (ITA) via scores of 30-27, 29-28 and 29-28.

Nico lost the first round on two of the score cards, but came back and won the next two rounds to give USA their second win of the day.

Men’s lightweight (60kg)

  • (UZB) Hurshid Tojibaev def. Hakan Eresker via scores of 30-27×2 and 30-25.

This was the least competitive fight of the night. Pure dominance by Tojibaev.

  • (GBR) Joe Cordina def. Charly Suarez (PHI) via scores of 30-27, 29-28 and 28-29.

This was a competitive fight. Both guys have lots of potential.

  • (TJK) Anvar Yunusov def. Shan Jun (CHN) via scores of 30-27×2 and 29-28.

Yunusov injured his lead hand and basically won this fight with one arm.

Men’s light heavyweight (81kg)

  • (BRA) Michael Borges def. Hassan N’Dam via scores of 30-27 and 29-28×2.

WOW. N’Dam is a former middleweight title challenger in the pro ranks and just got beat in the prelims.

  • (COL) Juan Corrillo def. Erkin Adylbek Uulu (CMR) via scores of 30-27×2 and 29-28.

Men’s heavyweight (91kg)

  • (GBR) Lawrence Okolie def.  Igor Pawel Jakubowski (POL) via scores of 29-28×3.

Okolie with a very smart performance here. He used all of his natural skills to get the win.
