Heading into Saturday’s Olympic Archery schedule, four countries had already earned their spot in the quarterfinal of the men’s team competition. On Friday, countries competed in a Ranking Round to establish who would be the top four seeds in the quarterfinals. Those four countries were, in order, Korea, United States, Italy, and Australia.
During the elimination rounds, France, Netherlands, China, and Indonesia all won. The biggest upset of the day may have been the Indonesia vs. Chinese Taipei match, which was supposed to go to the heavily favored Chinese Taipei team.
In the quarterfinals, three of the top four seeds won, with Italy being the only top-seeded team to lose. China would go on to the semifinals with their win over Italy, who won the gold medal at the 2012 London Olympics. With the win, China advanced to play the United States in the semi, though they lost. The other semifinal was a match-up between Australia and Korea, which ended with a Korean victory.
In the Bronze Medal Game, Australia beat China, earning the bronze. Korea then beat the United States in the Gold Medal Game, taking home the gold for the second time in the last three Olympics.
The gold medal team of Kim Woo-Jin, Ku Bon-Chan, and Lee Seung-Yun defeated the U.S. team of Brady Ellison, Zach Garrett, and Jake Kaminski by a score of 2,057 to 2,024.
On Sunday, the women take their turn in the team event, with Korea looking for a clean sweep. The Korean women’s team has won the gold medal in the team competition in every Olympics since the team competition became an event in 1988.
