The Olympics judo slate from Rio 2016 got underway in a big way on Saturday with Day 1 of the Games as both the men’s 60 kg and women’s 48 kg tournaments and competitions got underway. It was a grueling day for all the athletes involved, but with a gold medal in sight, how could they not feel motivated.

In the Olympics judo women’s 48 kg division, Brazilian Sarah Menezes was looking to defend her gold medal by winning another one on her home soil. However, she suffered back-to-back losses in the quarterfinals and repechage and ultimately didn’t medal in Olympics judo.

However, it was a shocker in the gold medal bout as one of the biggest underdogs of the competition in Paula Pareto of Argentina faced off against Bokyeong Jeong of South Korea. After scoring 10 points midway through the bout, Pareto was able to play enough defense to ultimately win gold. Jeong took silver while Japan’s Ami Kondo and Kazakhstan’s Otgontsetseg Galbadrakh took the bronze medals.

For the men’s 60 kg competition, the gold medal match was an absolute classic as Russia’s Beslan Mudranov took on Yeldos Smetov of Kazakhstan. The two grapplers fought to a scoreless draw in the time limit, leading to a golden score situation for the gold medal. In the end, though Mudranov was able to bring Smetov down and secure gold for Russia in Olympics judo. Japan’s Naohisa Takato and Uzbekistan’s Diyorbek Urozboev earned the bronzes.

If that was just Day 1 of Olympics judo, fans are in store for a treat over the next two weeks of competitions.
