With the explosion of basketball on the international stage over the past few decades, one of the primary benefits has been the increased parity in Olympics men’s basketball. In essence, it’s not just USA Basketball destroying everyone as they have legitimate threats for the gold medal coming at them. Two of those legitimate threats will be facing off in preliminary round action on Saturday with Australia vs France.
Though you may not think of Australia as a perennial powerhouse in basketball, they have a handful of players that could really make some noise in Rio at the Olympics. The Aussies have five six players currently in the NBA in Andrew Bogut, Joe Ingles, Matthew Dellavedova, Patty Mills, Cameron Bairstow, and Aron Baynes, but also have many other talented veterans from around the world coming to Rio.
France has been a powerhouse in international and Olympics men’s basketball for some time now and they’re still thriving with the likes of Tony Parker, Nicolas Batum, Boris Diaw, and many others in the fold. However, the question is always if they can live up to the hype and expectations and that question persists coming into Rio.
Australia vs France will be broadcast on the Olympics Basketball Channel and live streaming will be available through NBCOlympics.com and NBC Sports app.
