The 2016 Rio Olympics started off with a busy slate in men’s gymnastics, as spots in the finals were determined for all six individual rotations in addition to the team and individual all-around competitions on Saturday.

As expected, China won the preliminaries in the team competition with a score of 270.461. The surprise of the day was the United States, who came in second in the all-around behind a 1-2 finish from Sam Mikulak and Jake Dalton in the floor exercise despite multiple falls on other rotations. Medal contenders Russia and Japan finished in third and fourth, respectively.

Mikulak came in seventh in the individual all-around and will represent the United States in the final, along with captain Chris Brooks. Both have a lot of work to do to catch Ukraine’s Oleg Verniaiev, who easily won the individual all-around with a score of 91.964 while also finishing first on the parallel bars.

Upstart Great Britain finished fifth in the all-around and has the best shot to overtake the trio of favorites for a surprise medal. Max Whitlock won the pommel horse with an impressive score of 15.800 and was followed closely by teammate Louis Smith in second.

China’s best performances came on the rings, with Liu Yang winning the preliminary with a 15.900. Teammate Deng Shudi finished in fourth in the all-around and is expected to threaten for a medal.

Germany’s Fabian Hambuchen won the horizontal bar qualification, edging out Great Britain’s Nile Wilson. Danell Leyva and Mikulak qualified for the finals, finishing fourth and sixth respectively.

Each final will feature eight participants, with the first gold medal going out in the team all-around on Monday.
