It’d be foolish to say anything other than the fact that USA Basketball is the favorites to win gold in Olympics women’s basketball at Rio 2016. No team has the talent or experience that the Americans can boast. However, there are still other medals up for grabs and always the chance for an upset or a dark horse to come out of nowhere. Two candidates to be that dark horse out of Pool B face off on Saturday in the preliminary rounds with China vs Canada.
China finished second in the 2015 FIBA Asian Women’s Championships and then third in the Olympics qualifying tournament. They’ll be looking for their captain in small forward Len Wu to lead the way throughout the Olympics and they have enough talent to compete on most days in Rio.
The Canadian Women’s Basketball Team has been inconsistent at times, but have been rolling as of late. They won the 2015 FIBA Americas Women’s Championship and will be looking for another performance of that caliber in Rio as they’ll be led by their captain, guard Kim Gaucher.
This China vs Canada matchup won’t air live on TV, but will be available for live streaming on NBCOlympics.com and the NBC Sports app. The matchup will then air on TV at 3 p.m. ET on the Olympics Basketball Channel.
