One of the most exciting sports in every Summer Olympics is undoubtedly handball. And while the men’s action is great, the pace, the speed, and the skill that is shown off in Olympics women’s handball is always wholly impressive. On Day 1 of the 2016 Rio Olympics, that action got going in a big way with all 12 teams playing.

Romania: 19, Angola: 23

Group B

Netherlands: 14, France: 18

Obviously you can tell there were some fantastic matches in women’s handball on Saturday. However, what really stands out is the first game of the day with host Brazil knocking off the two-time defending gold medalist Norway. Now things appear to be wide open in this competition after just one day.

And here’s a look at the group standings after the Day 1 Olympics women’s handball action and results:

Group A

1. Spain
2. Angola
3. Brazil
4. Norway
5. Romania
6. Montenogro

Group B

1. Russia
2. France
3. Netherlands
4. Korea
5. Argentina
6. Sweden

The top-four teams from each group will advance into the knockout stage, which also serves as the quarterfinals for Olympics women’s handball. Norway is just on the inside fringe of that with no points but only a -3 goal differential.

What’s clear though is that the matches are all going to be close in this event and competition and it could be any of these 12 countries winning gold when it’s all said and done in Rio.
