Even Jimmy Fallon was not prepared for what ended up going down Friday night when he challenged his guest Seth Rogen to a Lip Sync Battle.
Fallon started off the fight with a high-energy rendition of “Don’t Mind” by Kent Jones, complete with pre-planned dance moves.
Then, for the first time in Lip Sync Battle history, The Roots played one of their own songs for one of the lip sync numbers. Instead of opting for the usual playback, Rogen lip-synced to The Roots’ “Mellow My Man” while the band performed it live behind him.
“We have one of the greatest bands in the world here on this stage,” Rogen said to introduce his first performance. “I’ve been a fan of The Roots since, literally, the day I was born.”
“How could you!” Fallon exclaimed to his house band after Rogen finished. “We’re family! I had no idea!”
After lamenting his hurtful betrayal, Fallon lip-synced “Slam” by Onyx. Fallon got up close and personal with the the camera, throwing all his effort into spitting out the fast lyrics of the 1993 hit.
But then Rogen drove it home with a perfect performance of Drake’s “Hotline Bling.” To go above and beyond, Rogen donned a gray turtleneck sweater, just like the one Drake wears in the song’s music video. He also performed some of the iconic dance moves from the video, which drew roars from the audience and made Fallon double over with laughter.
While there have been many memorable performances as part of Lip Sync Battle, Rogen certainly made sure his was unique enough to be remembered.
