Xfinity driver Derrike Cope is reportedly OK after a scary car explosion he was involved in at Saturday’s 2016 Watkins Glen race.

Driver Derrick Cope was luckily unharmed following a car explosion during Saturday’s Xfinity series race at Watkins Glen International. The incident happened on the 60th lap and caused a scare, while also costing Cope a potential win in the event.

According to NBC Sports, Cope’s No. 70 Chevrolet went up in flames as its hood “violently crumpled,” and a large plume of smoke was seen. It was all apparently caused by something detonating in the engine compartment, but NASCAR officials have yet to release information on what caused the blast as of this report.

Cope is a former Daytona 500 winner having won the race back in 1990. He was immediately taken to the nearby medical center, checked and reported to have no injuries. Following his clearance from the medical center, Cope was in good spirits but mentioned that in “35 years of racing he’d never seen anything like that before.”

Joey Logano would end up winning Saturday’s race for Team Penske after leading 67 of the race’s 82 laps. There were a total of six cautions for 18 laps at the event. An earlier incident saw a multi-car pileup occur on Lap 18 which ended up taking Kyle Busch out of the race.

NASCAR driver Dale Earnhardt Jr. would tweet about the incident, talking about how it reminded him of his childhood in a way.

While it’s bad news for Cope that he took a loss in the event, the good news in all of this is that nobody was hurt in the incident at Watkins Glen.
