The 2016 Rio Olympics had their Opening Ceremony yesterday, officially kicking off the Summer Games. On Sunday, the Olympic diving competition will begin, with the first event being the Women’s synchronized 3m springboard final.
Competing in Sunday’s event will be China’s Wu Minxia, who can be the most decorated woman in Olympic history during the 2016 Olympics. Minxia is tied with countrywoman Guo JingJing with six medals all-time, and if she can win a gold on Sunday, will have the most gold medals of any diver ever.
If Minxia and her partner Shi Tingmao do take home the gold in Sunday’s final, she will have earned medals in the most Olympic Games, having won in 2004, 2008, and 2012. Emilie Heymans of Canada is the only other woman to earn diving medals in four Olympics.
Synchronized diving events are direct finals with no preliminary or semifinal round, and each team will perform five dives. After the five dives, the medalists will be determined. China is the odds-on favorite to take the gold, as Bovada.lv has them at 1/14. The closest country to China is Canada at 12/1.
