Olympics table tennis 2016 results: August 7

Day two of Olympics table tennis got underway Sunday as the men’s singles second round and part of the third round were completed while the women finished half of the second round on Saturday and would complete the other half as well as part of the third round on Sunday.
We are finally seeing the real contenders stick out as Monday’s fourth round will be the final one before the quarterfinals and the gold medal match will take place Thursday.
Men’s second round
A little behind the women, the men’s singles second round action got underway on Sunday afternoon with 16 matches taking place.
Jonathan Groth of Denmark advanced to round three as did Great Britain’s Liam Pitchford, Russia’s Alexander Shibaev, Nigeria’s Quadri Aruna, Romania’s Ovidiu Ionescu, Brazil’s Hugo Calderano, Greece’s Panagiotis Gionis, Qatar’s Li Ming, Sweden’s Kristian Karlsson and Canada’s Eugene Wang.
The only victors who didn’t either sweep or win in five games were Chinese Taipei’s Chen Chien-an, Romania’s Adrian Crisan, Japan’s Koki Niwa, Great Britain’s Paul Drinkhall, Slovenia’s Bojan Tokic and Kou Lei of Ukraine.
Women’s second round
Eight matches took place on Saturday in the women’s singles while the other eight were completed on Sunday afternoon.
France’s Xue Li came out with the only sweep from the second half of matches in the second round on Sunday from the women.
Thailand’s Nanthana Komwong, Chinese Taipei’s Chen Szu-Yu, Sweden’s Li Fen, Viktoria Pavlovich from Belarus, North Korea’s Ri Myong-Sun, Netherlands’ Li Jiao and Luxembourg’s Ni Xialian also went on to third round action.
Men’s third round
The men’s third round finally kicked off on Sunday night as some of the premier table tennis players in the world got their first action.
China’s Ma Long was the first winner who will be headed into round four play on Monday. Joining him will be Brazil’s Hugo Calderano, South Korea’s Youngsik Jeoung, Japan’s Jun Mizutani, Ukraine’s Kou Lei, Nigeria’s Quadri Aruna, Portugal’s Marcos Freitas and Germany’s Timo Boll.
Women’s third round
Another eight matches took place for the women’s singles field with winners heading into the fourth round on Monday.
China’s Ding Ning, Germany’s Han Ying, Singapore’s Ying Mengyu and Chinese Taipei’s Chen Szu-Yu all won their third round matchups in clean sweeps.
North Korea’s Kim Song I, South Korea’s Jeon Jihee, Hong Kong’s Doo Hoi Kem and France’s Xue Li all advanced to the fourth round as well.
