Team USA showed no mercy against Senegal, running away to a massive victory in their Olympics women’s basketball opener from Rio
If we’re being honest, there aren’t truly any teams that stand much of a chance against USA Basketball in the Olympics women’s basketball competition. There is such a talent discrepancy between Team USA and every other squad that it’s hard to imagine anyone being able to close the gap. However, it’s even harder to imagine Senegal even coming close after what happened in each team’s opener on Sunday in Rio.

USA Basketball came out firing right away. Maya Moore got on the board first with a converted and-one, but that’s when the first haymakers started getting thrown as Diana Taurasi starter getting into a rhythm and knocking down bombs from three, going 4-4 from deep to start the game. That helped pull Team USA out to a 35-9 lead after just the first quarter and it only got more brutal from there.
Senegal didn’t roll over as they continued to show the tremendous fight that’s what the Olympics are all about. However, the talent of even the bench players for Team USA like Breanna Stewart and Elena Delle Donne was far too much for them to handle. The Americans got up big and never looked back as they secure the opening 121-56 victory.
Three Stars
Sylvia Fowles, USA – 15 points, seven rebounds, one assist
Diana Taurasi, USA – 15 points, three assists, two rebounds
Breanna Stewart, USA – 15 points, three rebounds, one assist, one steal
