Entering the Rio Olympics under a huge amount of pressure to perform, the American women’s gymnastics team delivered in the qualification round.

As expected, the United States ran away with the team all-around competition with a score of 185.238. China finished in a distant second with 175.279, while Russia came in third.

In her first chance on the Olympic stage, Simone Biles lived up to the hype as the world’s greatest gymnast. Biles won the vault, beam, and floor exercise en route to a dominating individual all-around victory with a score of 62.366.

The more interesting all-around battle was between Aly Raisman and Gabby Douglas for second place, as each country is limited to two participants in the final. Raisman finished in second with a score of 60.607, beating Douglas by less than half a point.

Douglas qualified for the uneven bars apparatus with a third-place finish, and the two had the exact same score on the balance beam. However, Raisman made up the ground with a second place finish in the floor that included a score of 15.275.

Brazilian Rebeca Andrade’s fourth-place finish in the individual all-around was the highest of any non-American. Seda Tutkahlyan and Aliya Mustafina of Russia finished in fifth and sixth respectively.

The United States also picked up a victory on the uneven pars, as Madison Kocian scored a 15.866. Mustafina finished narrowly in second with a 15.833. Laurie Hernandez will also represent the United States in the final after finishing second on the beam.
